Elastic is a search company with a simple goal: to solve the world's data problems with products that delight and inspire. As the creators of the Elastic Stack, we help thousands of organizations including Cisco, eBay, Grab, Goldman Sachs, ING, Microsoft, NASA, The New York Times, Wikipedia, and many more use Elastic to power mission-critical systems. From stock quotes to Twitter streams, Apache logs to WordPress blogs, our products are extending what's possible with data, delivering on the promise that good things come from connecting the dots. We have a distributed team of Elasticians across 30+ countries (and counting), and our diverse open source community spans over 100 countries. Learn more at elastic.co

The Infrastructure team in Elastic Engineering sits underneath the Elastic product stack and support many efforts in the company at large. Primarily we’re software developers that handle state — CI specifications, cloud resources, integrations between teams. The Elastic Stack is built on our infrastructure and we touch everything needed to get it there. We also do software consulting around the organization to put our products to use for our own business.

What you'd be responsible for

  • Develop tooling to facilitate the shipping of Elastic product documentation and infrastructure
  • Support production services related to all aspects of Elastic, including our product downloads, Docker registry, maps service, and much more

Required experience

  • Software Developer: You probably have a broad software development background (we use Python, Clojure, JavaScript, Ruby, Perl, Rust, Go, and Haskell, and company-wide is Java, OCaml, and more). Being deep in some language is a requirement. You don't have to be a polyglot already, but you will become one. You also need to know HTTP+HTML fairly well.
  • Documentation developer: As part of software development, you're passionate about publishing docs to the web. Our toolchain is based on Asciidoctor, but if you know anything on the landscape in depth you could be a great addition to the team. This could be from things like a static site generator, DocBook, LaTeX, JavaDoc, Perl POD, PyDoc, RDoc, Haskell Haddock, or even Pandoc.
  • Continuous integration: We don't use scripts and manual steps run from a laptop. We put all that in CI so anyone can push a button. You need to be passionate about the last mile of all projects, which is wiring it up to the infrastructure.
  • Senior engineer: This role provides a central coordination point for our tech writers. While you won't have HR responsibilities, wanting to work across the engineering organization is critical. You would recommend and build technical tooling, often for others to use, so you need to enjoy interacting with your customers.

Other related experience

  • Systems Engineering: We are an operations team. We solve problems with code, but fundamentally we keep things working. You may have worked as an SRE. Maybe you've helped run a SaaS platform. Again, deep knowledge of HTTP will be very helpful.
  • Infrastructure-as-code: You may have experience automating production Linux systems collaboratively, deriving configuration through version control, and are proficient in some of Docker, Puppet, Chef, Ansible, Salt, Habitat, Dhall, Terraform, Packer, your own shell scripts. Maybe you've thrown half of that away and use Kubernetes. We do that too.

About you

  • You have a strong desire to automate.
  • You love to live close to deployment, continuously integrating and delivering
  • You believe that words are powerful and writing for humans is just as important as writing for the computer.
  • You have a desire to build reusable software components. You’ve likely created an open-source library for your favorite language, or at least made a meaningful contribution to one.
  • You enjoy a versioned workflow, representing your work in git, motivated by a GitHub workflow through issues and pull requests.
  • You love open-source development and have committed to some project somewhere (doesn’t have to be ours), whether mailing lists, patches, documentation, etc.
  • You enjoy working in a distributed company and the active, asynchronous communication it requires.
  • You believe that a diverse company is a better company, and want to work with men and women all over the world.
  • You are willing to listen and give everyone at the table a voice.
