At Elastic, we see endless possibility in a world of endless data. And we use the power of search to help people and organizations turn that possibility into results. Elastic is the leading platform for search-powered solutions. With solutions in Enterprise Search, Observability, and Security, we help improve customer and employee search experiences, keep critical applications running smoothly, and protect against cyber threats. Elastic enables organizations worldwide to use the power of Elastic, including Netflix, Uber, BBC, Microsoft, and thousands of others.

Elastic was built on a foundation of being free and open, which trickles down to how we work. We’re a distributed organization and have been from the beginning. Being distributed isn’t just a way of doing business—it’s a mentality that is at the core of our culture.

About the Role:

Our mission on the Elastic Security team is to protect the world’s data from attack. Through our free and open approach, we are building a community and a product that’s making a meaningful difference in the lives of our users. And because we’re built upon the Elastic Stack, we are fulfilling our mission with speed, scale, and relevance. Our practitioner heritage as a team means trust and transparency is at the core of how we communicate with each other and with our users.

The team is diverse and distributed across the world, and collaborates on a daily basis over GitHub, Zoom, and Slack. Thus, the ability to work within a distributed team is critical. You don’t always need to be the person with the answer or the person making the decisions, but instead should be able to guide discussions to help the team make decisions together.

As a Distinguished Engineer for the Security Solution, you will be ultimately responsible for the technical architecture and quality of our Security Solution, built on top of the Elastic Stack. You will be partnering and working closely with a VP-level Team Lead and Product Lead to ensure an inclusive, productive, and successful work environment for a large team (200+ people). You will be working closely also with peer Tech Leads from the other groups in Elastic (Platform, Observability and Enterprise Search) in order to ensure a consistent architecture and user experience across our products. You will communicate the power of the Elastic Stack and how it applies to the Security Solution internally, to customers and to the industry at large.

What you will be doing:

In this role you will

  • Lead by influence - Provide technical leadership for the Security team, working collaboratively with other Architects and Engineers in the team.
  • Leverage the Elastic Stack - Learn the strengths and weaknesses of the Elastic Stack and guide the Security teams to use its strengths and avoid its pitfalls. Influence the evolution of the Elastic Stack to better meet the needs of Security.
  • Communicate the power of the Elastic Stack to customers and at industry events, and how we leverage it in Elastic Security, and solicit feedback towards the continued improvement of our solution and platform as a whole.
  • Act as a contact point for other Elastic teams for anything related to the technology and architecture of the Security Solution.
  • Drive decisions on technical topics both within the team and across teams.
  • Ask questions and challenge the teams toward simplification and well designed architecture. Focus teams on achieving measurable outcomes.
  • While direct code contributions are not generally expected at this level, staying hands-on is appreciated by the team. Lead by example by coding proof of concepts, doing benchmarks, and leaving thoughtful reviews.
What you bring along:
  • Significant previous experience providing technical leadership for a team of Senior Engineers and Architects.
  • Significant previous experience in an ownership role for technical direction and strategy.
  • Significant previous experience communicating technical concepts to customers and at industry events, tailoring the message to the audience.
  • Experience developing and reviewing complex technical requirements, and translating them into actionable tasks for engineers.
  • Technical expertise in Cloud and Data technologies.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to drive conversations across multiple teams to a conclusion.
Nice to have:
  • Experience with the Elastic Stack.
  • Experience in the Security space, especially SIEM or Security Analytics products.
  • Experience delivering open source products.
